new obesity medicine fellowship

UTHealth Center for Obesity Medicine and Metabolic Performance is inviting applications for a comprehensive Clinical Fellowship in Obesity Medicine. The Allison Family Foundation Fellowship in Obesity Medicine and Metabolism is a one-year fellowship designed for current residents or recent graduates of internal medicine, family medicine, or endocrinology training programs who wish to obtain rigorous, comprehensive subspecialty training in the area of Obesity Medicine. The fellowship is recruiting fellows seeking to begin the program in either July 2016 or July 2017.

American Board of Obesity Medicine Diplomate Deborah Bade Horn, DO, MPH, FOMA is the fellowship’s program director. She answered questions for the ABOM blog about the importance of creating opportunities for fellows in obesity medicine and what distinguishes this new fellowship.

Why is it important to the field of obesity medicine to increase the number of fellowships available across the country?

It is our hope that physicians with an interest in obesity medicine will have several points of entry for a career focused in our field. Increasing the number of fellowships available across the US provides opportunities for early career physicians and newly graduated residents to receive advanced traditionally mentored training in academic institutions to prepare them for clinical excellence and leadership in the field.

How do you hope this fellowship will support the progress that has been made in expanding the field of obesity medicine?

The newly endowed UT COMMP Fellowship will provide the fifth opportunity in the US for fellowship training in obesity medicine and the only fellowship with the financial stability of an endowment. Our goal is to further the establishment of standards of comprehensive care for individuals struggling with overweight or obesity through an integrated team approach and for our fellows to create similar centers and fellowships in new institutions upon completion of their training.
