Why did you pursue obesity medicine certification?

As an internist in the hospital setting I have seen the pervasive influence of obesity on my patients’ health. Unfortunately it has become far too common.  My personal experience with dramatic weight gain related to my pregnancies fueled my desire to learn and understand the intricacies of weight management. My pursuit of the obesity medicine certification was another step towards my deeper understanding of obesity and equipping myself to better help others in their journeys towards optimal health.

Many doctors have told us about the “aha” moment that stimulated their interest in obesity medicine. Do you have an obesity medicine “aha” moment that sticks out in your memory?

Over the last few years, I’ve been reflecting on my medicine career and my own experiences.  I have been in pursuit of discovering the niche that I was most passionate about and in which I would have the greatest impact on people’s lives. I wanted to delve into a niche where my own unique experiences and passion in conjunction with my medical knowledge would be valuable. Recently, while exploring new research on obesity medications, it struck me that this might be the avenue through which I can contribute more and make a difference.

How do you currently incorporate your obesity medicine training into your practice?

I have started a telemedicine program through which I provide personalized medical weight loss and coaching. It has proven to be immensely rewarding.

Why do you believe obesity medicine certification is valuable?

The knowledge I have gained by preparing and getting certified is now the foundation of my practice. I feel well equipped to provide expert counselling and treatment. The importance of acquiring this education has proven to be invaluable.

What is your greatest success story so far?

I consider myself successful when my patients report having more energy and confidence, better mood, moving more, and sleeping better.

What is the biggest challenge you face in your practice?

Unfortunately there are many challenges in this field, however they are also opportunities for growth and improvement. One such challenge has been overcoming the misinformation that people have learned about obesity and treatment options. Another challenge has been access to anti-obesity medication and the stigma related to it.

What do you wish other physicians knew about treating obesity?

Treating obesity is essential to treating many other conditions.
