NUMBER OF ABOM DIPLOMATES

tops 4,100 in US and Canada

The American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM) this week announced that more than 770 physicians passed its board certification test administered in February 2020. The number of physicians who are board certified in obesity medicine now exceeds 4,100 in the United States and Canada. A record 776 examinees passed the ABOM exam, establishing obesity medicine as one of the fastest growing fields in medicine. This represents a 23 percent increase in the total number of ABOM diplomates compared to the previous year.

The 776 physicians who passed the most recent ABOM certification exam include internists (306), family physicians (231), surgeons (47), endocrinologists (38), pediatricians (37), gastroenterologists (24), and obstetricians/gynecologists (19), along with numerous other specialists.

“During this extraordinary time in history, it is more important than ever that physicians are well trained to treat their patients who have obesity,” said ABOM Board Chairman John Cleek, MD. “The record number of doctors who took the time to seek out this certification and put forth the tremendous effort required to pass the exam now have tools to make an immediate impact in their communities.”
