How long is the certification good for?

Certification is good for 10 years.

How can I check my certification status and find out when I need to recertify?

You can always check your certification status by looking up your own name in the online diplomate directory: http://www.abom.org/diplomates

Here you will find your certification dates and certification number.

What do I need to do to recertify?

Recertification information can be found here: http://www.abom.org/recert

How do I find the certification management system?

All diplomates have an account in the online certification management system (CMS). You can access the system here: https://abom.learningbuilder.com

If you certified prior to December 2016, you will need to create your profile within the system  before you can access the CMS. To create your profle, please follow the instructions below:

STEP 1. Go to  https://abom.learningbuilder.com and follow the instructions under the “Diplomate” heading in order to create an account.

STEP 2. Once you have created your account, log back into the system.

The My Account page now displays. Click the orange Complete Edit button.

STEP 3. The Practitioner Edit Role window now displays. Answer the questions about your practice. Then click the Continue to Application button. At this point the process is complete and you may log out or close your browser.
How do I save my CME documentation in the certification management system?

Log into the CMS at https://abom.learningbuilder.com

Under the ABOM logo on the left side of the page, hover over the ‘My Application’ tab and click “Applications” tab.

Click the orange ‘Begin’ button next to “Recertification” tab.

Scroll down to the CME section and click ‘Add Activity’

 

How do I update my contact information (address, phone, email, etc.)?

Log in to the certification management system at https://abom.learningbuilder.com

In the upper right hand corner click the ‘My Account’ button

Scroll down and look for the field you would like to edit (email, phone number, address)

Click the pencil icon next to the field you would like to edit

Edit the field and then click the orange save button

How can I order a duplicate diploma?

Duplicate diplomas are available for a fee of $25 per diploma.

Log in to the certification management system at https://abom.learningbuilder.com

In the upper right hand corner click the ‘My Account’ button

In the left corner hover over ‘My Application’ and click Applications

Click the button next to the ‘Order Duplicate Diploma’ tab and follow the instructions.

How do I access the current version of the sample test questions?

Log into the CMS at https://abom.learningbuilder.com

Under the ABOM logo on the left side of the page, hover over the ‘My Application’ tab and click “Applications” tab.

Click the orange ‘Begin’ button next to “Recertification” tab.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and look for the “Review Sample Test Questions” section.

What do I need to do to recertify?

Recertification requires completing 120 hours of CME credit on the topic of obesity, submitting an application, and taking the certification examination. Visit the recertification page for additional information.

What items are required with an application to recertify?
  • Proof of an active medical license in the U.S. or Canada.
  • Proof of completion of U.S. or Canadian medical residency.
  • Active board certification in an American Board of Medical Specialties (“ABMS”) member board or osteopathic medicine equivalent.
  • A minimum of 120 credit hours of continuing medical education (CME) recognized by the American Medical Association Physician Recognition Award (AMA PRA) Category 1 Credits on the topic of obesity are required for recertification.* The 120 credit hours must be completed within the 10 years prior to recertification. A copy of the applicant’s CME certificates should accompany the application.

*Recognition by the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) Mainpro M1 credits and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) MOC Section 1 credits on the topic of obesity will also be accepted.

Is the ABOM recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS)?

No. It is the long-term goal of the ABOM to become recognized by the ABMS.
